Bullying is repeated harassment over a period of time, and is done in a way that makes it difficult for the person being bullied to defend themselves. The three main types of bullying are:
- Physical (e.g. taking your money/belongings, pushing, hitting, kicking and pinching, sexual abuse, including unwanted physical contact or comments),
- Verbal (e.g. teasing, sarcasm, name calling, racist/sexist remarks
- Indirect (e.g. spreading rumours/starting gossip, getting you into trouble for no reason, excluding you, sending hurtful messages via social networking sites, texts, emails etc)
Bullying doesn’t always happen in school/college. If these things are happening to you outside of school, or online, it is still bullying. Bullying can make you feel depressed, withdrawn and lonely. If you can, then just ignore the bullies and walk away. The bullies are trying to get a reaction and will probably get bored if they don’t get one.
If the bullying persists it is important to tell somebody. Try telling your parents, a friend or a teacher. You are much more likely to have the bullying stopped with help from someone else.
