Young people that are leaving care or prison are much more likely to be found homeless than other young people. When you leave care or prison, make sure that you talk to your social worker or leaving care worker about what is available with regards to accommodation and other help. Your council/local authority should provide you with information on the choices you have to make when you leave care or prison.
Social Services are obliged to find accommodation for young people leaving care or prison in some circumstances, when the young person is thought to be in a vulnerable situation. You are not guaranteed a council flat when you leave. Other types of accommodation that you may be offered are a hostel, a night shelter, bed and breakfast, a shared house, a private rented flat or lodgings. Every situation is different, as is every council and housing department. You might be put in emergency accommodation until the council finds you long term accommodation but the Children (Leaving Care) Act ensures that young people are always supported during the transition from being in care or prison to fending for themselves.
